AI and the Next Wave of Unicorns

AI and the Next Wave of Unicorns

As we look ahead to 2020, we are entering the New Year with more DevOps, DevSecOps and open source clients than ever before. The global DevOps market is projected to top $8B in 2022, and with the market rapidly coalescing around Kubernetes, investor interest is exploding as industry heavyweights like Amazon and Google snap up innovative startups to maintain their edge.

Even eye-popping acquisition price tags like the $34B that IBM forked over for Red Hat aren’t necessarily a sign of an overheated market, either. IBM has the cash and needs to make bold moves to keep leading in an increasingly crowded space.

As more IT services are delivered by cloud, the continuous improvement / continuous delivery (CI/CD) model becomes a business necessity. This trend is placing a higher value on the DevOps and open source-based startups that can provide these tools. Since most enterprises are moving data, applications and business processes onto multicloud environments, inventors are also betting big on container technologies.

The next frontier for investors eyeing the confluence of trends in DevOps, containers and multicloud environments? Cloud-based database services, taking full advantage of AI-driven insights running on top. There is a huge opportunity for the right startup to move aggressively into this space and become the next Unicorn and acquisition target.

The market is still hot for the right enterprise tech to get snapped up at any moment, and new competition can come from where you least expect it.

Happy New Year, friends. Exciting to see what 2020 will bring!
